We've known for some time that a black-and-white version of Logan would be included with the movie’s home-media release, but we were surprised to see director James Mangold’s tweets about a US theatrical release. According to Mangold, the critically acclaimed R-rated blockbuster will hit theaters in black-and-white format on May 16. The Blu-ray and DVD release date is May 23.
Based on the director's tweets, the screening of the classic cut will be a one-off event:
Suggestion. Hard core B&W loving LOGAN fans should not make any plans on the evening of May 16th.

@KarlAlden @Aldo7heApache Won’t be on a TV. And the answer is no. To make a great B&W version of a film, the whole thing’s gotta be regraded & timed shot by shot.

@AlleynLemarr @KarlAlden @Aldo7heApache Yes, but it will be on big screens on the 16th.

Photos released via the Instagram account wponx as part of 20th Century Fox’s marketing campaign for Logan were all in black-and-white. They also released a promo clip titled "Sunseeker", in which Hugh Jackman's clawed mutant took a drive in a limo. Check it out below, along with a fan-made black-and-white makeover of the movie's first trailer!

Fans loved the whole concept, and they requested that Mangold release the third and final Wolverine standalone movie in black-and-white. The director seemed enthusiastic, too, as he responded to such a request:
Workin' on it.
In a subsequent interview with Deadline, he promised that "a very handsome black and white version" would be included with the Blu-ray release. But until today, we had no idea that it would also be screened in theaters.
In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X somewhere on the Mexican border. However, Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.
