Kevin Feige recently promised that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rapidly expanding character roster would soon include openly LGBTQ characters.
Marvel Television has introduced a number of openly LGBTQ characters over the past few years, including Jeri Hogarth in Netflix's Jessica Jones; Joey Gutierrez in ABC's Agents of SHIELD; and Nico Minoru and Karolina Dean in Hulu's Runaways. But Marvel Studios’ big-screen Marvel Comics-based projects have yet to add a similar character.
The studio has missed out on several opportunities to introduce the universe’s first LGBTQ character. Thor: Ragnarok had Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), who was bisexual in the comics. However, a scene that explicitly addressed her sexuality didn't make the final cut.
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler shot a scene that featured some flirtation between Okoye (Danai Gurira) and Ayo (Florence Kasumba), but like Taika Waititi’s Ragnarok scene, it landed on the cutting room floor.
Feige told The Playlist that Marvel has firm plans to add LGBTQ characters to the MCU roster, but stopped short of revealing details about specific characters or when we might see them on the big screen. Check out the conversation below!
Interviewer: When are we getting a Gay, Bi, LGBTQ, or out character in the MCU? Is it even in the works?
Feige: Yes.
Interviewer: That's the answer?
Feige: Yeah, that's the answer.
Interviewer: It's not someone we've seen yet, I'm guessing?
Feige: Both.
Interviewer: Both?
Feige: Both ones you've seen and ones you haven't seen.
