Joe Russo Talks X-Men Joining Avengers

Joe Russo addresses the rumors

Joe Russo, half of the winning duo that directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, addressed some of the rumors concerning the MCU’s next Phase. According to these rumors, there is a reason why no details have been released concerning what happens after the Infinity War. Furthermore, these rumors were ignited by the Russo brothers themselves, who said that the Infinity War would bring change into the shared universe.

Thus, according to many, Marvel is secretly making a deal with Fox concerning the many superheroes and supervillains the latter studio owns. The fact that Doctor Strange brings in the multiverse makes the fans believe even more in this possibility.

So is there any truth to this?

No, there isn't, at least according to Joe Russo. During an interview with Comic Book, the director said:

As far as we know, right now there isn’t talk regarding the X-Men. I don’t know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations, or if there are conversations happening, but we certainly haven’t heard of any.

So, according to Joe Russo, nothing has transpired and a deal isn't in the works. And, obviously, he was asked about the deal between Sony and Marvel, which brought Spider-Man into the MCU. Joe Russo said that this was due to the relationship between Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. However, he then added that a very special situation was required for this deal to work out.

And, obviously, that special situation was the failure of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

At the moment, Fox is actually doing pretty well with its superhero shared universe. However, despite Deadpool proving to be a major hit, the X-Men franchise could do a lot better. Furthermore, let us not forget about the debacle called Fant4stic and the failure to launch the Gambit spin-off…

So is this a special situation or not?

We guess it is a bit special, even if Joe Russo can’t say so.
