Gambit has been stuck in development hell for about three years, and it’s safe to say that fans are getting frustrated. But if the latest rumor about the movie turns out to be true, it will definitely be worth the wait.
According to Splash Report, 20th Century Fox is looking at Daniel Craig (James Bond) to play the lead villain in Gambit. Channing Tatum, who’s been set to play Gambit since the very beginning, recently worked with Craig in Steven Soderbergh's heist comedy Logan Lucky. He’s been singing the praises of the British actor ever since, and it’s likely that he’ll go to bat for him with the studio.
The same website recently shared some alleged details about the movie's plot. They suggested that a number of mutants would appear, including Dani Moonstar, Rictor, Fifolet, and Multiple Man, and added that Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister, would be the movie’s main antagonist. The studio is considering Craig for the Mister Sinister role, which would probably develop into a recurring role in future X-Men movies:
There are "conversations" about locking up DANIEL CRAIG to be Nathaniel Essex, a.k.a. Mr. Sinister in Gambit, and also in other X-Men movies.
Just the thought of Craig as Mr. Sinister is enough to thrill fans, but we shouldn’t forget that this is just a rumor. Splash Report has shared some solid scoops in the recent past – their Hellboy reboot coverage in particular – and that’s enhanced their credibility. They might be spot on about Fox’s interest in the 49-year-old Craig, but there's no guarantee that he’d even agree to a deal. He turned down Marvel Studios' offer to play Thor in 2008 - he could very well nix a deal for Gambit, as well.
UPDATE: The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez claims that the rumor is not true. Check out his tweet below!
