Other than Channing Tatum's statements that Gambit is still moving forward, we know nothing about the spin-off, which has met with a number of delays. The movie lost a couple of directors (Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman) and underwent a screenplay rewrite in response to the success of Logan and Deadpool. It’s also likely that the film has lost Léa Seydoux, who was set to play female lead and Gambit love interest Bella Donna Boudreaux.
We’d heard that a new director would soon be announced, but nothing has transpired since. Frank Darabont was the most recent director to be linked with the movie.
Splash Page recently reported that the first Gambit plot outline popped up online, and it indicated that Gambit will be an Ocean's Eleven-type film. Featured mutants will include Rictor (adapted in Logan), Fifolet, Dani Moonstar (portrayed by Blu Hunt in the upcoming New Mutants), Multiple Man (portrayed by Eric Dane in X-Men: Last Stand) and Marrow (cameoed in Deadpool).
The website added that a blue X-Men movie regular will also appear, although it wasn't clear whether it will be Beast, Nightcrawler, or Mystique.
Perhaps most importantly, the Splash Page report confirmed that Mister Sinister will be Gambit’s main antagonist. This has been the subject of rumor since Gambit was announced and Bryan Cranston teased the role.
Check out the plot outline:
Remy Lebeau (Channing Tatum) is on trial in New Orleans. He's considered a huge security risk. We flash back to almost 25 years before. Master thief Luke Lebeau runs into eight-year-old Gambit while doing a heist. Impressed by his skills, he offers to take the mutant orphan under his wing. Raised alongside other strays he calls "cousins", the teenage Gambit becomes the superstar of the Thief Guild. He encounters Bella Donna Boudreaux while on the run from the police. Sparks immediately fly, since Bella is a fellow mutant. Their love is directly prohibited by both families, since the Boudreaux are sworn enemies of the Lebeau clan. Deciding to unite the two sides, Remy offers to have the two clans team up on a HUGE heist to profit both families. Of course, the whole plan goes awry, and in the chaos, Maryanne Boudreaux shoots and kills Luke Lebeau.
We jump to 10 years later. Gambit is hired to do a job in Paris that entails stealing something from the Louvre Museum. It’s apparently a test job to see if he still has it. His mysterious employer is revealed to be Nathaniel Essex, aka Mr. Sinister. He offers Gambit 40 million to recover a mysterious trunk that was stolen by the Boudreaux clan. It will be auctioned off during the yearly Thieves Ball, where all the criminal organizations in the world meet up. It uses New Orleans' Mardi Gras celebrations as a cover. Gambit decides to enlist a crew of mutants to pull off this seemingly impossible heist"¦
As always with such reports, take all of this with a grain of salt. However, we know that the first Gambit script featured Bella Donna Boudreaux, and that Mister Sinister will play an important role. But it appears that these characters were written out of the new screenplay.
