Entertainment Weekly has named Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds their 2016 Entertainer of the Year.
Deadpool was a huge success when it was released in February of this year. Fans loved Reynolds as the wisecracking Wade Wilson in what was by far the most vulgar film Marvel has released thus far. It definitely earned its R rating, but that didn’t appear to hinder the movie’s popularity in the slightest.
Reynolds told EW:
I knew that this [film] was going to speak to the very core of the Deadpool fan base, and I knew they would embrace it. I think it just really landed at a fortunate time. We were right at “peak superhero”, particularly in the sense that the superheroes were all intermittently clenching their jaw muscles and brooding. Deadpool came along and sort of threw all that on its ass.
Deadpool’s success is even more impressive, considering that Reynolds spent more than a decade trying to get the film made. With commitment like that, he definitely earned his new Entertainer of the Year title.
Deadpool 2 is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to hit theatres in January of 2018.
