Rumor had it that the Deadpool 2 test screenings were less than promising.
A number of bloggers and movie pundits tweeted that the second standalone movie for Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth had turned in poor performances during recent test screenings. Of course, rampant speculation ensued, with many saying that 21st Century Fox was attempting to fix the movie by conducting massive reshoots.
But Collider EIC Steve Weintraub subsequently denounced the rumors. He asserted that the first couple of screenings scored above 90, and added that any reshoots would simply produce additional scenes with sample audience favorites Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz).
The Hollywood Reporter, which ranks among the most reliable film industry trades, agreed with Weintraub, suggesting that with three test screenings, the sequel’s lowest score of 91 actually surpassed the original movie’s highest score.
The first two screenings scored at 91 and 97, and two separate cuts screened in Dallas scored at 94 and 98. Attendees at the best-received screening – which the studio plans to let us see on May 18 – described the atmosphere as electric, and akin to watching the Super Bowl.
THR suggested that the Deadpool 2 reshoots weren't as massive as the rumors led us to believe. Leitch and his team completed filming scenes to add more of what test screening audiences enjoyed during a brief six-day visit to Vancouver. They finished up with an additional two-hour Los Angeles shoot to add a mystery cameo.
