Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the actors who is always a top choice of any fancast, no matter what movie the fancast is all about - but this time, the fans were right: the British actor was indeed the chosen one to portray Doctor Strange.
And Benedict Cumberbatch has made quite the leap from being an anonymous-like TV actor (yes, we know that Sherlock has gathered quite a gathering) with movies like War Horse, The Hobbit, Star Trek Into Darkness and 12 Years A Slave. But still nobody believed that Marvel will choose him.
But they did so and everybody cheered.
Benedict Cumberbatch - a risky role?
Not so much - not for Marvel and not for the actor himself. Marvel is known to bring out the best from all the actors he hires. Just take a look at Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy, or at least check out Paul Rudd in the Ant-Man trailer. In a way, Marvel is a stable that discovers new stars for the big screen.
And Benedict Cumberbatch said himself that there is no risk in taking the role of Doctor Strange, by mentioning just about the same reason. But it isn't just that, since he has also had past experiences with the spiritual side of this world: he has taught Buddhist Monks how to speak English.
What did the actor say about Doctor Strange?
Well, without paraphrasing anything, here's what he said: "I don't think it's a risk because of Marvel. Marvel is a stable of bringing out ordinary comic characters and turning them into screen-like gods. It's very different, it's an Astral Plane. There's a huge new element to this Marvel universe that's going to be employed in building this story and this character. But you know, I'm really excited about it, about working with Scott [Derrickson] whose imagination is endless, and all the boys and girls at Marvel who know what they're doing. I've got a few things to get under my belt first. I've got to do that little stage production of "Hamlet" in the summer and the Christmas special of "Sherlock," which we start shooting in about three days' time - Whoops! Yeah, that's there."
So he has a busy schedule"¦
"¦ but it would have been even more awesome if he was a villain in a galaxy far, far away, as the fancast said"¦
