In 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon debunked popular speculation about a romantic relationship between Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow by showing that the former was already married with kids and the latter was falling for Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. But in the end, the green rage monster left in an untraceable Quinjet, and he hasn’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since.
Hulk will return in this year's Thor: Ragnarok, but he won't encounter Black Widow, as she won’t appear in that movie. But both characters will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, and it would make sense to have them stumble across each other at some point in the movie. Johansson recently confirmed that this will happen.
During an appearance on Bravo TV's Inside the Actor's Studio, the 32-year-old Johansson confirmed that a reunion will take place in the upcoming Russo Brothers flick. She mentioned a scene featuring Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff in the upcoming Russo Brothers flick, but didn’t reveal any details. She did suggest that the scene had some heartbreaking elements:
I just finished Avengers: Infinity War. The first one. My character has this ongoing relationship with Mark Ruffalo's character. I had such devastation that day. I don't know why. I was so devastated. It was something about this character that Mark plays, and this is something that should feel so solid and suddenly doesn't"¦And it reminded me of so much of the things going on in my own life at the time"¦
You might know that Scarlett Johansson's and her husband, Romain Dauriac, separated last summer, and she officially filed for divorce a few months ago. So the Hulk/Black Widow relationship in the May 4, 2018 release might mirror her real-life situation, which is bad news for those rooting for the characters to live happily ever after.
