Fresh off of its debut at CinemaCon, we have a brand new sneak peek at the new Superman movie. Directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad), this is the first new movie as part of the new DC Universe. DC is getting a big reboot and this is the centerpiece of it all. Gunn, along with DC Studios co-head Peter Safran, has a lot riding on this. To help tee up the ball, Warner Bros. has revealed nearly five minutes worth of footage. Check it out.
The back half of the preview largely contains footage from the first trailer for Superman. That dropped several months ago. The big appeal here is the extended clip in the beginning. It features Kal-El being carried to the Fortress of Solitude by Krypto the Superdog. It looks quite unlike Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. It’s very brightly colored and far more lighthearted. It also features lots of other heroes from the DC universe.
Here is the synopsis for Superman.
“Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
This is just the first part of a big, multi-movie, multi-TV-show plan hatched by Gunn and Safran. Warner Bros. and DC Studios are already in production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That is scheduled to arrive next summer. Other planned movies include Swamp Thing, The Brave and the Bold and Teen Titans, among others. TV shows such as Booster Gold and Lanterns are also in the works.
“I cannot wait to share the film with all you guys and the rest of the world, Gunn said on stage at CinemaCon. “We’re still in the throes of post-production.”
The new DCU will be a full reboot. The vast majority of the actors coming over from the DCEU will be playing new characters. That means we’re getting a new Batman as well. The new DCU’s Batman technically already debuted in Creature Commandos. However, that was in animated form and we still don’t know which actor will be playing him. It has been made clear that Robert Pattinson from The Batman won’t be brought over to this new universe. Those movies will exist on their own.
The cast is led by David Corenswet (Twisters) as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind), Anthony Carrigan (Gotham), Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus), Skyler Gisondo (Booksmart), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys), Wendell Pierce (Selma), Alan Tudyk (Andor), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) and Neva Howell (Greedy People).
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11.
