Wonder Woman will make her solo debut in June of this year. With Gal Gadot set to return as the warrior princess and Patty Jenkins directing, the movie is set to make history as the first flick to focus on a superheroine (sure, we did have Catwoman with Halle Berry, but that can hardly be called a movie).
However, despite the looming release date, we still don't have one important detail about the movie. Two trailers and a couple of clips have been released, but we have no idea who the main antagonist is. For a long time, it was rumored that Wonder Woman would go against either a New God – connecting the solo flick to the upcoming Justice League movie – or Ares, the God of War himself.
But nothing has been confirmed.
Most recently, the French magazine Studio Cine Live sat down with Chris Pine to talk about the Wonder Woman movie. Among other things, the actor confirmed what we saw in the trailers:
[I play] a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge. My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plane but is shot down in the open sea (via Screen Rant).
The magazine went on to summarize the film’s plot:
Behind these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. Now, it turns out that this is precisely the goal of Ares, the god of war. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus (he was killed by Ares when he rebelled against his son, despite the help of the Amazons)"¦
So can we take this news for granted? Not really, since Warner Bros. hasn't confirmed anything yet. But it makes sense to have Ares at the root of World War I (though it’s a surprise to learn this way that Zeus has been killed already).
