Before Suicide Squad was released last year, it appeared that Warner Bros. had finally learned the secret to making a good superhero flick (that doesn't focus on the Batman). The trailers looked amazing, the stories from the set revealed that the actors had tons of fun and delved deep into their characters, and there was so much promise from David Ayer, a director known for his gritty films.
But then, after the embargo was lifted, the first reviews arrived - and they weren't positive at all. The movie was released and made tons of cash, but that doesn’t mean it was a success. What happened? As it was later revealed, Warner Bros. panicked after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit the theaters. They ordered extensive reshoots and hired someone else to cut and edit Suicide Squad.
Everybody knows the result. This aside, David Ayer is now slated to direct a Harley Quinn spin-off, called (for the moment) Gotham City Sirens. But he knows that Suicide Squad could – and should – have been better. If not for anyone else, it should have been better for the fans.
The director posted a letter expressing his gratitude to fans on Twitter. But he also said that he’d learned from the experience. He also said that a better Suicide Squad would have had the Joker as its main villain. You can check out the full letter below:
At this moment, with the (too) many movie announcements for the DCEU, it’s pretty clear that Warner Bros. has no idea where to take the shared universe next. As far as we’re concerned, it should trust its directors more.
What do you think? Will this happen?
