Even with yesterday's surprising news about Justice League’s runtime, premiere date, and review embargo, Warner Bros. apparently has another big box office hit. The movie’s release date is still about a month away, but early tracking indicates that it will debut at $150 million in the US. Given the fact that opens in China on the same day, JL’s box office take may top its budget during its first three days.
In addition to the fact that the movie is the first big-screen Justice League outing, part of its appeal is the secrecy surrounding the project. For example, we still don't know the circumstances of Superman’s return, we have no idea what the deal is with Steppenwolf, and we don't know which characters will return or debut (yes, we're talking about Green Lantern).
For example, a Hollywood Spotlight excerpt posted on Reddit said that Lex Luthor will be in the film and that he’ll work with Steppenwolf. Those who saw a first screening said that Jesse Eisenberg doesn't appear in Justice League, but with the extensive reshoots and Joss Whedon's post-production work, it’s possible that the character could appear.
The same excerpt added that Steppenwolf is actually Darkseid's uncle, which contradicts previous reports that said he’s the nephew. Also, Steppenwolf also survived a battle with Doomsday, which indicates that the monster we saw in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was one of many.
It’s implied that the Kryptonians knew how to create Doomsday weapons and that they might have used one against the Justice League villain.
It’s interesting that Steppenwolf is actually tired of living in Darkseid's shadow, and might even try to overthrow his nephew. His arrival on Earth could be part of an even bigger plan to divert the heroes’ attention toward Darkseid and start a follow-up war against the ruler of Apokolips.
Again, the mystery surrounding so many of the Justice League plot points could be an ace in the hole for the studio. At the same time, the numerous secrets could also explain why the studio is waiting until a couple of days before the film's release to lift the review embargo.
Justice League will arrive on November 17.
