More Hints about a Man of Steel 2 Director

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel finally opened the DC Extended Universe in 2013. But this is 2017, and the studio still hasn't released a sequel. Last year, Warner Bros. told us that getting Man of Steel 2 off the ground was a priority. However, at this moment, we’re pretty much in the dark.

Apparently, we'll have to wait a couple more years until Superman finally has his second solo outing in this shared universe.

We’ve seen some clues suggesting that Man of Steel 2 is moving forward, although progress has been extremely slow. If we follow the clues, we could even conclude that the project has found a director. Multiple sources report that J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) was selected for this task, based on his Twitter activity and on various interviews the director has given.

First clue: Geoff Johns and Bayona have begun to follow each other on Twitter. Second clue: Bayona is currently working on Jurassic World 2, but the banner on his Twitter account is a still from Richard Donner's Superman.

These clues might appear to be trivial, but in the past, this kind of activity actually revealed choices made by both studios and directors.

J.A. Bayona (HeyUGuys)

Additionally, Bayona revealed during a Reddit AMA that he is a Superman fan, and added that the first movie he’d ever seen was the first Superman film Donner made. He said that this experience inspired him to become a director:

The first movie I saw in my life was Superman. I was three years old. The first memory I had was Christopher Reeve flying in the suit. Directing a Superman film would be great. I always wanted to be Superman. That’s the film that made me want to become a director (via Movie Web).

It appears that Warner Bros. really has found a director. Again, Bayona is working on Jurassic World 2, which arrives on the 22nd of June 2018, so we probably won’t see that Man of Steel sequel until 2019, at the earliest.

Tease (EW)

Could this mean that Superman will battle Black Adam in Shazam! before Man of Steel 2 arrives? Maybe The Rock has been teasing this rather than an appearance as an antagonist in Man of Steel 2.
