We need to start by saying that Latino Review came up with a scoop concerning a Legion of Super-Heroes last year, sometime during the Fall. As they said back then, Warner Bros hasn't revealed yet their full DC movies schedule yet and that Legion of Super-Heroes is one of those titles.
In all fairness, the studio didn't say anything about the planned Batman movies either. Furthermore, the Justice League Dark project, which is taking shape right now (and about which we wrote in here) wasn't mentioned either.
So they were pretty close from way back then.
Legion of Super-Heroes
Now it is Bleeding Cool that comes with a scoop saying that Warner Bros is indeed planning a movie based on DC's Legion of Super-Heroes. The site reports that the studio has acknowledged the success of Guardians of the Galaxy and that they have to found a rather unknown team of DC superheroes to emulate the success of Marvel.
But this isn't all, since the same site reports that the movie is supposed to be a Guardians meet Avengers type of film, set in the distant future and uniting heroes from all across the galaxy. Furthermore, the planned Legion of Super-Heroes film will be lighter in tone than the other DC movie adaptations of late, being closer to Shazam in this way.
Possible plans
Right now, we know that we have about 2 DC movies scheduled for release each year until 2020 - however, given that the Batman movies and the supposed Superman sequels haven't had their release dates announced, we can assume that this announced schedule will change. And this also gives way for the Legion of Super-Heroes to happen.
However, this is all just an assumption which should be taken with a pinch of salt - and we believe that Warner Bros and DC should wait until after 2020 to release a film with unknown names such as Cosmic Boy, Brainiac 5, Lighting Lad and Saturn Girl.
The team
These are just names which have appeared in the comics until now - they are not written in stone by the studio in any way. However, we can say that the Legion of Super-Heroes is a 31st century team of teenagers with super-powers with access to all sorts of technologies, including time-travelling ones. And this does open quite a few opportunities"¦
