The Flashpoint director’s chair has been vacant for over a year, but it looks as though two chairs may be necessary for that post in the near future.
Warner Bros. hasn’t made an official announcement, but Variety and other outlets recently reported that co-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Vacation) were in negotiation to direct the movie featuring Barry Allen, aka The Flash (Ezra Miller).
The duo contributed to the Spider-Man: Homecoming script, and were even in the running to direct that movie, until Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures decided to sign Jon Watts. They’re currently working on next month's action comedy Game Night, starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.
Joby Harold was brought in to do a page-one rewrite of the script a couple of months After Rick Famuyiwa withdrew from the project over creative differences, the studio decided that they wanted to be sure that the script was right before they signed a new director. Harold’s recently submitted fresh draft allowed them to finally move forward.
Throughout the past year, several directors – including Robert Zemeckis, Matthew Vaughn, Sam Raimi, and Phil Lord-Chris Miller - were rumored to be in contention to direct Flashpoint. But the Variety piece mentioned an additional Hollywood heavyweight who was evidently under consideration.
Variety reported that Warner Bros. initially courted Ben Affleck to direct Flashpoint, but he turned down their offer. In December 2017, it was reported that Affleck was expected to portray Batman opposite Miller's Scarlet Speedster, but no one mentioned that he might have been up for the director’s job.
