Whether she will be the pray or a predator in Suicide Squad, Enchantress (portrayed by Cara Delevingne) is certainly a notch above all the other supervillains who will be featured in the movie. After all, she is a powerful sorceress, whereas characters like Captain Boomerang and even Deadshot are still just simple humans.
But this isn't the point of the article. The point is what the Enchantress actress said about the comic book movie characters. Check it out below!
Cara Delevingne praises the girls of Suicide Squad
During an interview with Empire Magazine, the Enchantress actress said that there are only 3 major female characters in the Suicide Squad, but they are the best. We have no problem with this statement, since we have been dying to see Harley Quinn in a movie. And Katana certainly has a huge potential, being a superb swordswoman, wielding a sword that takes the souls of the enemies. We are not even mentioning Viola Davis's Amanda Waller.
But then she comes and makes a rather controversial remark. Hit 2 below and check it out!
Enchantress and the sexism of superhero movies
So yes, the Enchantress actress praises the girls of the Suicide Squad. But then she comes and makes a controversial remark such as this one: “Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist" (via Comic Book Movie).
Well, we cannot say that she is totally wrong, since there are very few female characters in movies (whether superheroes or supervillains) who play an important part/role in the development of a film. Mystique is one of these characters, while Black Widow is another one. Refresh our memory if there are some others too.
But wait, this isn't all that the Enchantress actress said about the comic book MOVIES (and not, well, comics, as everybody would have expected). Hit 3 below and see what arguments Cara Delevingne has for her statement!
Explaining sexism
Sexism is gender discrimination and there are many forms in which it manifests itself. As said, having female characters only in secondary roles is one of these forms, and maybe the most important.
Another form of sexism would be the over-sexualisation of these characters. And this is what the Enchantress actress doesn't like about the movies: “Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No-one would be able to fight like that. Wonder Woman, how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute." (via Comic Book Movie).
We are bedazzled. Yes, women are sexualized when they appear in movies (all sorts of movies, to be more specific). However, we've had pretty strong female characters in superhero films too - and the two mentioned on the previous page are the best examples. And while Mystique does appear naked (because, well, she is mutant and proud), Black Widow is a rather normal woman, who knows that she is beautiful and who knows how to take advantage of this.
So this isn't the kind of sexism we see in superhero movies. Of course, if we are to talk about comic books"¦
But what do you think? Is Wonder Woman unable to fight wearing her iconic outfit? What about Marvel's Captain Marvel?
Hit 3 and check out what Chris Pratt has to say!
Chris Pratt and sexism
Be prepared: "I think it's okay"¦ I don't feel appalled by it. I think it's appalling that for a long time only women were objectified, but I think if we really want to advocate for equality, it's important to not objectify women less, but objectify men just as often as we objectify women." (via Pink News)
As Star Lord says, lots of women actually built their careers on their looks, because this was their greatest asset (and the Enchantress actress is one of those women). Even more, the human body in a movie can be seen only as an object.
Yes, this was a joke from Chris Pratt. Or wasn't it?
Aren’t men objectified in superhero movies, when they are presented in a perfect shape? Star Lord knows this. Maybe Enchantress should too.
