A couple of months ago, we learned that the Harley Quinn-centric DC Extended Universe project we’d been hearing about since May 2016 would be titled Gotham City Sirens. David Ayer, who called the shots on last year's Suicide Squad, will direct the movie from a script penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
We haven't heard much about the upcoming project since then, but it appears that Ayer may have just revealed its main antagonist. The director shared a captionless photo of DC Comics supervillain Black Mask via his official Twitter account.
After his debut in the August 1985 issue Batman #386, Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, proved to be one of the deadliest and most enduring Caped Crusader foes. He’s a brutally sadistic Gotham City crime boss, and is known for his brilliant strategic mind, torture skills, and obsession with masks.
Since Ayer's tweet wasn’t captioned, we can’t be 100% sure that Black Mask will appear in Gotham City Sirens. But, considering the fact that the director used the social media platform to offer tidbits from Suicide Squad, including the first look at Jared Leto's The Joker, this doesn't look like a random tweet. More recently, Ayer seemed to confirm Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy as the lead characters for Gotham City Sirens by sharing a photo on Twitter. Here's Ayer’s photo of Black Mass:
If the supervillain is indeed the upcoming project’s big baddie, he’s a good choice. Despite being primarily a Batman nemesis, Black Mask has also had comic book encounters with Catwoman. As the character lacks super powers, Ayer will be able to craft a more grounded story - something he regretted missing with Suicide Squad. Additionally, introducing Black Mask is a good idea because he has never appeared in a live-action project.
