Why David Ayer Passed Up Suicide Squad 2 to Direct Gotham City Sirens

As the director of Harsh Times, End of Watch, and Fury, David Ayer was the best choice to direct a movie about a team of supervillains. Unfortunately, due to the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice backlash, studio interference, and a hastily written script, Suicide Squad was a complete mess.

Even so, it was a box office hit, and the announcement that there would be a sequel quickly followed the movie's release. At first, Ayer said that he would return to make an R-rated Suicide Squad 2, but he surprised everyone by dropping out to direct the Gotham City Sirens spin-off featuring Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

Why did Ayer change his mind?

While promoting his next directorial effort, Bright, David Ayer told IGN why he chose Gotham City Sirens over Suicide Squad 2. And his answer will leave you…well, speechless…considering the characters of the film:

It's a story about three fantastic women who are trying to find their way in the world and realize that they have more power together than they do individually. I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit.

As predicted, the Gotham City Sirens announcement was made at San Diego Comic Con. Other than Margot Robbie, no other roles have been cast and no release date has been set. It was also announced that Suicide Squad 2 will start shooting in mid-2018.
