While we are going to have to wait until November 17, 2017 to see Henry Cavill's Superman on the big screen, we can still watch a different version of the superhero this October in Supergirl Season 2. Unlike the first season, he won't be an off-camera character this time, and he will be portrayed by Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin.
With a great superhero comes a great supervillain! And the Man of Steel should be accompanied by one of his most iconic adversaries, right? Entertainment Weekly confirms that following his arrival in Supergirl Season 2, Kal-El will be facing off against Metallo, a supervillain who has been rivaling him in the comics since 1959!
The Kryptonite-powered cyborg will be portrayed by Frederick Schmidt, who is best known for appearing in movies like Starred Up, Snow in Paradise, and Second Coming. He also has roles in a number of upcoming ventures, like the Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning starrer Brimstone and the Matt Smith and Natalie Dormer starrer Patient Zero.
Over the years in the comic books, Metallo has been provided with a number of origin stories that differ from one another. Here's how the version to be seen in Supergirl Season 2 is described:
When international assassin John Corben is badly injured after taking on both Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), he is reborn by a shadow organization into the Kryptonite-powered supervillain Metallo.
Supergirl isn't the first live-action television series to introduce Metallo. The character has actually appeared in three different shows in the past. He was played by Michael Callan in Superboy Season 2, by Scott Valentine in Lois & Clark Season 2, and more recently by Brian Austin Green in Smallville Season 9.
Zack Snyder initially considered Metallo as the main antagonist for Man of Steel 2 before they decided to make Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice instead.
While The CW has yet to offer us our first look at Frederick Schmidt's Metallo, they have for now released a new poster for Supergirl Season 2. Check it out below!
