Batman v Superman: More on Lex, Alfred, and Batman

Doomsday in Batman v Superman

While, officially, Batman v Superman won't be present at Super Bowl 50, this doesn't mean that the marketing machine has stopped working. On the contrary, quite a few interviews were taken in the past two days, concerning the main characters of the movie.

Thus, Jeremy Irons (who will portray Alfred Pennyworth) has said many of times that his version of the character will be much different from the one of Michael Caine. If the Nolan version was nothing more than just a butler who used to be a soldier (he doesn't put these skills to use beyond Batman Begins), the Snyder version will do whatever it takes in order to protect Bruce Wayne.

The trailers for Batman v Superman made it clear that Alfred doesn't see eye to eye with Batman as far as the Man of Steel is concerned. However, we can bet that he will still be in the former master's corner. Yes, Empire Magazine confirms that the Wayne Manor burnt and that the former butler lives somewhere else now.

Jesse Eisenberg, in another interview with Empire, talked about the obvious similarities between Lex Luthor and Mark Zuckerberg, the character who made him famous. While Zack Snyder says that these similarities show who the industrialists of the modern-day are, the actor says that he didn't feel as if there is any connection between Luthor and Zuckerberg.

On the contrary, this felt like a totally unique experience, one which was perfectly molded on his acting style: “It was written in a way I would say dovetails with my skills, it was written with a real psychological underpinning, it was written with a kind of humor that I knew I could do. And with a dramatic intensity that I enjoy. He uses wordplay and very clever allusions to other stories and myths, but it never compromises what is scary about him.” And what can be scarier than a powerful man, with connections made all over the place, setting up his mind to do something? But Lex is still a human in Batman v Superman. His power is in fact his influence on other people. His power is the financial success that he has. And now he feels threatened/is in competition with someone who actually has raw physical power, one which dwarfs anything that ever existed. As Eisenberg says, Superman is an existential threat for Lex Luthor.

In the trailers, we saw a pretty out-of-character Superman, if we can say so, who is pretty violent as if he has lost his mind. We wonder why"¦

Ben Affleck talked about the relationship between his character and Henry Cavill's one, saying that both Batman and Superman actually believe they are the good guys. The problem appears when they are assessing the other as a major threat. So, in Batman v Superman, the issue will be an ideological one, with Batman's principals being born from his fears (and, dare we say, paranoia).

Furthermore, Batman doesn't just believe that Superman is a threat. He also believe that this alien will act as a beacon for other, even more powerful villains. And this is why he has to put an end to it - if Bruce believes that Superman can end civilization if he wanted, he is certain that someone else more powerful will appear and do that if Superman doesn't do it.

As said, Batman v Superman will officially skip this year's Super Bowl. However, the buzz is strong with this one, a sign that the marketing campaign did its job more than well. Below you will see a statistic coming from Variety, which analyzes who are the most talked about movies on the web (Marvel should think about this and start giving the fans more info about Civil War).
