Chris Terrio might be an Academy Award winning screenwriter, but he wasn't familiar with the superhero movie genre until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He worked on the screenplay for the March 25 release, which was originally written by David S. Goyer. And he's already penned the script for Justice League Part One, which releases on November 17, 2017.
Chris Terrio claims that Batman v Superman is darker in tone than first DC Extended Universe installment Man of Steel and the upcoming Justice League movie. Here's what he said in a recent interview with Wall Street Journal:
Batman v Superman is a bit of an Empire Strikes Back or Two Towers, or any similar middle film in a trilogy. The middle film tends to be the darkest one. I do think from Man of Steel through Justice League, it is one saga, really.
The 39-year-old writer also shared that he didn't intend to write Justice League Part One initially, but his first day on the Batman v Superman set strongly influenced him to change his mind. He saw a scene featuring Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor and Holly Hunter's Senator Finch that made him feel like he was watching "some strange, great performance in an independent film".
The conflict between Batman and Superman is not just due to manipulation!
While discussing the roots of the conflict between Batman and Superman, Chris Terrio compared the two superheroes with two Greek gods. He thinks that the roots of conflict between the two are "almost archetypal". He explained:
I began to think Batman and Superman occupy different parts of the mythic imagination. In superhero stories, Batman is Pluto, god of the underworld, and Superman is Apollo, god of the sky. That began to be really interesting to me "” that their conflict is not just due to manipulation, but their very existence.
However, he believes that there's "a common humanity" between the two that is discovered at a certain moment in Batman v Superman.
