A couple of years ago, nobody would have thought that an Aquaman movie would cause much excitement. But things have changed, with Jason Momoa portraying the superhero and James Wan directing the movie. The cast seems to be excellent, as well: Willem Dafoe is set to portray Nuidis Vulko; Patrick Wilson is set to bring Arthur Curry's villainous brother Orm to life; and Amber Heard is set to become Mera.
Another casting announcement was released today, and it appears that Ocean Master will have a bit of help in his attempts to bring Aquaman down. We’ve learned via The Hollywood Reporter that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has signed on to portray Black Manta, another well-known Aquaman villain (Trevante Rhodes, from Moonlight and The Predator was also tested).
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is best known for the Netflix show The Get Down. He will also appear in the upcoming Dwayne The Rock Johnson vehicle Baywatch. So, once again, we have every reason to be excited about Aquaman - especially since other DCEU projects might be delayed.
But, given the rumors that The Rock's Black Adam will cameo in Aquaman, is this too much for James Wan to handle? Not necessarily - it’s possible that Orm might not be a villain in the first movie, with Black Manta playing the main antagonist and Black Adam cameoing (maybe in a flashback?).
This isn't all, though, since it’s rumored that another star will also join the cast. The Hollywood Reporter also says that none other than Nicole Kidman is sought by the studio for the role of Arthur Curry's mother, Queen Atlanna. According to this source, she has always been James Wan's choice for this role.
