Christian Bale Rumored to Return as Batman if Michael Keaton Doesn’t

Christian Bale is being eyed to make a return as Batman. This, according to a new report from DCEU Mythic. While the report can and should be regarded as nothing more than a rumor for the time being, it seems Warner Bros. is hoping to woo Bale back as the Caped Crusader, but under a very specific set of circumstances.

As was recently reported, Michael Keaton is currently in talks to reprise his role as Batman in The Flash solo movie. The project is said to be based on the famed Flashpoint storyline. Due to the nature of the story, it allows for alternate timelines. Therefore, it seems Keaton’s Batman will cross streams with the DCEU.

However, at present, Keaton is still just in talks. Something could fall through. If that happens, Warner Bros. has a backup plan. That plan being Christian Bale. Now, this might be a hail mary of a backup plan as Bale hung up the cape and cowl after The Dark Knight Rises. There were unconfirmed rumors the actor was offered a huge sum of money to return for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Instead, Ben Affleck took on the role.

This to say, it is hard to imagine Bale would suddenly reverse course and return to the role. The other important point is that Warner Bros. is said to want Keaton for multiple DC Films projects. He would take on a role not unlike that of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That makes it all the more unlikely that Bale would agree.

Here is a synopsis for Flashpoint from DC Comics.

“The red-hot, sold-out five-issue miniseries from Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert is back in a new hardcover! This is Flash Fact: When Barry Allen wakes at his desk, he discovers the world has changed. Family is alive, loved ones are strangers, and close friends are different, gone or worse. It’s a world on the brink of a cataclysmic war – but where are Earth’s Greatest Heroes to stop it?It’s a place where America’s last hope is Cyborg, who hopes to gather the forces of The Outsider, The Secret 7, S!H!A!Z!A!M!, Citizen Cold and other new and familiar-yet-altered faces! It’s a world that could be running out of time, if The Flash can’t find the villain who altered the time line!”

Bale starred in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. All three films were directed by Christopher Nolan. The trilogy helped to reinvent the character for modern audiences. They collectively grossed nearly $2.4 billion at the global box office.

Ezra Miller is still set to reprise his role as Barry Allen, with Andy Muscietti (IT, IT Chapter Two) set to direct.

The Flash is currently set to hit theaters on June 3, 2022.
