Back in 2019, it felt like Avengers: Endgame was the peak of collective cinematic viewing. People all over the world flocked to see the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in theaters. Endgame shattered opening weekend box office records, posting the biggest ever domestic opening with $357.1 million. It was a record that seemed like it might stand forever. But Spider-Man had something to say about it.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit theaters over the weekend. Directed by Destin Danile Cretton, it posted a much bigger-than-expected opening, taking in $360 million domestically. That’s right. Tom Holland’s latest solo Spider-Man movie now holds the record for the biggest domestic opening ever, overtaking Endgame. Globally, Endgame still holds the record with a staggering $1.2 billion global debut. Brand New Day opened to $941.7 million, which is massive, to say the least.
This firmly cements Holland’s Spider-Man in a league of his own. 2021’s No Way Home shattered multiple records during its epic run. It went on to make $1.9 billion globally and posted the third-biggest opening ever. Holland is the common thread that runs through most of the MCU’s biggest success stories, as he was also a huge part of Avengers: Infinity War, which went on to earn $2 billion.
As for Endgame, it was for a short time the biggest movie ever. It ultimately earned $2.79 billion worldwide, overtaking James Cameron’s Avatar worldwide. However, thanks to a re-release, Avatar eventually reclaimed the crown with a total that stands at $2.92 billion. The fact that a street-level Spider-Man movie is now in conversation with literally the biggest movies of all time is nothing shy of impressive.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
“It’s a brand new day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see.
The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.”
The question now is just how high can Brand New Day fly? It will pass the $1 billion mark very soon. It also feels like $2 billion is all but assured at this point. Can it truly challenge the likes of Endgame globally on the all-time chart though? Time will tell. In the meantime, all eyes are new on Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters in December. Holland isn’t part of the confirmed cast, but it’s very likely he’ll show up in next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which will only serve to bolster that movie’s commercial prospects.
