It seems like we should forget about the X-Men showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a number of years.
Now that The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox has been officially completed, Marvel Studios should be able to use the X-Men and other Fox-owned Marvel Comics characters in the MCU. So hypothetically, any of those characters could appear in Avengers: Endgame or any other movie released by the studio after that.
But from what Kevin Feige has said in a new interview, we shouldn't expect the X-Men to show up in the MCU anytime soon. Speaking to io9, the Marvel president suggests that those characters are not part of the five-year plan that the studio has been working on before the Disney-Fox deal was sealed. When asked about the mutants' arrival in the world of the Avengers, here's how he responds:
It'll be a while. It's all just beginning and the five-year plan that we've been working on, we were working on before any of that was set. So really it's much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they're home. That they're all back. But it will be a very long time.
Marvel has kept us in the dark about the MCU Phase 4, keeping its release slate vacant beyond Spider-Man: Far From Home, which arrives in theaters this summer. But we do know for certain about six projects that are part of the studio's five-year plan: Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Black Panther 2 and Doctor Strange 2. It also probably includes a third Ant-Man movie, a third Spider-Man movie, and a Captain Marvel sequel.
We will get to know about the whole list of projects that are a greater priority to Marvel than an X-Men movie when the studio unveils the MCU Phase 4 slate. But that either isn't happening very soon. In a separate interview with IGN, Feige suggests that they won't make any announcements until Spider-Man: Far From Home has arrived in theaters. When asked whether the studio would attend this year's San Diego Comic-Con, here's how he responds:
I don’t wanna be annoying, but I think it … In a certain way, that is also sort of a post-Endgame spoiler. I will say all of the post Comic-Con, post Spider-Man: Far From Home stuff, we … Here’s an exclusive. We’re gonna keep making movies. We’re gonna still keep making movies after these two. And we will talk about them soon after Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out.
