Marvel Comics has released a new trailer for Ultimate X-Men #1. The publisher recently re-launched the Ultimate Universe with a brand new series of titles, and the mutants are up next. The trailer promises a version of the X-Men quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. While that’s a bold claim, the trailer seems to back it up. Check it out.
The new book focuses on the fan-favorite mutant Hisako Ichiki, AKA Armor. Hailing from writer/artist Peach Momoko, the book has a very unique look and feel. It also has a bit of a horror vibe to it. That’s not unfounded in the world of the X-Men, after all. Just look at The New Mutants movie. There are plenty of examples from the comics as well. It is very distinctive and looks like something that could only exist in the Ultimate Universe, divorced of the main Marvel Comics continuity.
Here is the synopsis for Ultimate X-Men #1.
“Hisako Ichiki is a teenage girl who just wants to live a normal life – go to school, hang out with her friends, ignore the political strife broiling over after the events of Ultimate Invasion – but life has other plans for her. In Japan, urban legends have sprung to life and brought some unusual new powers with them…Meet Armor, Maystorm and a group of new Ultimate X-Men the likes of which you’ve never seen before!”
“At first, I was worried about being chosen for such an important project, but the more I draw and write the series, the more confident I am with my own vision of Ultimate X-Men,” Momoko told AiPT Comics recently. “Ultimate X-Men isn’t directly influenced by classic X-Men stories. I like to believe C.B. [Cebulski] and Jonathan Hickman chose me because they wanted something completely new and different.”
This is the third title to launch as part of Marvel’s new Ultimate line. The whole thing was born out of Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch’s Ultimate Invasion series. The saga began with the Maker, one of the final survivors of the doomed Ultimate Universe. He traveled back in time to a parallel Earth to create a world without heroes. The Maker prevented various heroes from achieving their destinies and ruled this world in secret through various global factions. The first two books to launch were Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Black Panther. A New Ultimates series is also in the cards.
Ultimate X-Men #1 hits shelves on March 6.
