Logan Director Talks Disney/Fox Deal

Without a doubt, the Disney/21st Century Fox deal will have a huge impact on both the MCU and the X-Men universe. There have been reports that Disney may not be interested in Fantastic Four at the moment, so Kevin Feige - who already said he was eager to work with the mutants – will hint at their existence in the MCU sooner rather than later. Avengers 4, which will wrap up three major MCU phases, will most likely be the movie to bring them in.

Nonetheless, as much as fans want to see the likes of Doctor Doom or Wolverine join Spider-Man and Company, this means that fewer comic book movies will be released in the near future. So far, Disney has released at most three MCU flicks each year, so it’s safe to say that they aren’t going to dedicate a slot to the X-Men anytime soon.

Logan director James Mangold addressed another problem that might arise once the deal is sealed. He said that Disney might hesitate to back R-rated movies such as Deadpool and Logan, and their reasoning is very simple:

If they're actually changing their mandate, if what they're supposed to do alters, that would be sad to me, because it just means less movies. I just hope what we end up with is going to be a positive in terms of movies. The real thing that happens behind the scenes when you make a movie that’s rated R is that the studio has to adjust to the reality that there will be no Happy Meals. There will be no action figures. The entire merchandising, cross-pollinating side of selling the movie to children is dead before you even start. And when that's dead, it means you're making a grown-up movie (via CBM).

As an example, Daredevil has found his own darker corner within the shared universe. But, no matter how good the Netflix series are, they still can't hold a candle to big-screen movies for sheer spectacle.

What's the point of having characters such as Magneto join the MCU when such characters are exiled t0 the small screen?

Do you agree with James Mangold's argument? Or do you believe that Disney is open to making R-rated flicks? We’d be very happy to see more of X-23 on the big screen!
