After shattering box-office records in 2014, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy are set to return on May 5 of this year. If early box-office estimates are to be believed, the upcoming sequel will be an even bigger hit, with an opening weekend of around $160 million. It’s safe to assume that Marvel Studios will want to make a third movie about the band of spacefaring antiheroes, as they did with Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.
During a recent interview with Complex, Gunn was asked whether there were any plans for a third Guardians of the Galaxy installment. The director responded that it will definitely happen, but he wasn't sure whether he would take the helm again. However, he said that he hoped to make up his mind soon:
There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do, really, that’s all it is. I’ve got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians, or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.
Whether James Gunn returns to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3 remains to be seen, but it’s the Russo Brothers who will work with the characters in Avengers: Infinity War. During the interview, the Gunn also teased key roles for his team in the May 4, 2018 release:
You know, listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but an integral part to that.
