DC’s Wonder Woman Video Game Has Been Canceled

Wonder Woman - Warner Bros. Games

That’s a wrap on the Wonder Woman video game. Despite spending millions of dollars and years developing it, Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to scrap the project entirely. What’s more, the company is actually shutting down several of its gaming studios as part of a broader, strategic shift. That includes Monolith Productions, which had been developing this title.

According to Variety, Monolith is being shut down alongside Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. The movie comes at a tough time for Warner Bros. Games overall. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League lost around $200 million. The online multiplayer game MultiVersus was also a major, money-losing disappointment. As a result, Warner Bros. Discovery is restructuring its games business. A Warner Bros. Games representative had the following to say about it.

“As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”

“Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities,” the rep added. “This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.”

Here is the synopsis for the canceled Wonder Woman video game.

“The single player open-world action game will introduce an original story set in the DC Universe and allow players to become Diana of Themyscira in the fight to unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world.”

Development of the Wonder Woman game was first announced in December 2021. A brief teaser was revealed at the time, but details have been slow to come ever since. Aside from the struggles with recent titles, much has shifted at DC and Warner Bros. Most importantly, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the heads of DC Studios. They are now in the midst of rebooting the entire DC Universe. That begins in earnest this summer with Gunn’s new Superman movie.

Part of Gunn and Safran’s strategy involves making sure everything is connected. That will even extend to video games at some point. It’s entirely possible they have their own plans for Wonder Woman. Beyond that, director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 was scrapped after the underperformance of Wonder Woman 1984. This game, though not expected to be tied to the films, entered development before the DCU reboot came into play.

It’s unclear what Warner Bros. Games will do next with DC. We recently heard rumors that a Batman Beyond video game is in the works, but is reportedly years away. It sounds like WB is going to be more discerning about what enters development in the future, that much is certain.

Superman hits theaters on July 11.
