Gambit: An Origin Story, According To Channing Tatum

Gambit

Gambit is set to arrive in theaters October 7th, 2016. And while not much is known about the plot, the latest solid info comes from none other than lead man Channing Tatum.

There's a chance we’ll get to see Gambit earlier in 2016, in X-Men: Apocalypse, before his standalone movie. And that would be a great chance for Fox to introduce this established Marvel character.

But rumors aside, let's stick with the facts: if you've wondered what's coming down in Gambit, the solo movie, hit the jump to learn what Tatum has to say about it!

This interview was published in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, and pieces of it emerged on the web courtesy of Comic Book Movie.

Gambit is an origin story; the script is submitted

Are you surprised to learn they're not just sitting around? X-Men: Apocalypse might be the most marketed upcoming X-Men movie, but it's not the only one people at Fox are wrapped up in.

So, what's the current status of Gambit?

According to Channing Tatum, "Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it’s killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we’re going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies".

"It’s always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we’re going to shift things a little bit. There’s so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I’m super excited".

And, yes, you can take Tatum's word seriously: he's not just the lead man, he's also part of the producers' team.

And we heard right: Gambit is an origin story. So you can take that off your chest if you've wondered what they were going to concoct for Gambit.

But there's more: it seems Tatum's Remy LeBeau screen incarnation won't be so different from the comic book version of the character.

Gambit: "a tortured soul"

Tatum exudes loads of enthusiasm: "I love Gambit ["¦] I grew up in the South; my father’s from Loiuisiana. We’d go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture".

But what's that got to do with Gambit? Well, if you've perused the comic books, you know Gambit too is from New Orleans, Louisiana. Which is why Tatum continues, "["¦] I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me".

Plus, "He’s kind of a tortured soul and he’s not a good guy. But he’s not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!

Well, exciting news! To see Gambit is an origin story and that the character will not deviate - significantly, at least - from the comics, that's sort of relieving.

Plus, Tatum seems pretty connected to the character, which is a definite plus! Is this good news for you? Have your say below! And stay tuned, we’ll bring you the hottest scoop on all things Gambit!
