Marvel Introduces A New Spider-Man Villain Worse Than Carnage

Carnage and Torment in Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral Body Count #1 - Marvel Comics

Spider-Man has a new nemesis to contend with. In the history of comic books, it’s hard to find a character with a better lineup of villains than Spidey. But even amongst the likes of Doc Ock and even recent additions like Knull, Torment stands out. He’s even more dangerous than Carnage, apparently.

Set to arrive in the crossover event Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral Body Count, Torment is being billed as a very formidable foe. The one-shot book is written by Charles Soule (Venom), Al Ewing (Immortal Thor) and Joe Kelly (The Amazing Spider-Man), with artwork by Kev Walker (Infernal Hulk). Marvel has revealed several covers for the book, which you can check out below. They offer a glimpse at Torment, who has been on a killing spree.

Here is the synopsis for Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral Body Count.

“First your friends. Then your Family. Then you. The next epic Spider-Man and Venom crossover starts here and continues through April! A new super-powered serial killer is on the loose and they’re coming for Spidey, Venom and everyone in between. But what terrible secret has Carnage learned, and what does it have to do with Spider-Man?!”

The crossover will continue in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man and Venom. Torment is being billed as the most deadly killer since Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage. The character of Carnage made his Marvel debut more than 30 years ago. His reputation as deadly has always remained though. So those are big, bloody shoes to fill. Soule had this to say about it.

“Spider-Man was always a favorite of mine, and getting to write him a bit – not to mention Venom and Carnage – how could it get better? Well, adding a new villain to his rogue’s gallery, and even getting to design his origin… that would probably do it. Torment is a pretty intense character, and figuring out a beginning for him that could build to what we see him do in Death Spiral was a fantastic challenge. I think readers will be chilled and thrilled!”

“When Carnage hit the comic page it made you think Venom wasn’t that bad,” Spider-Editor Nick Lowe added. “Torment does that to Carnage here. He’s not a symbiote… he’s something much, much worse. And when you read what Charles Soule and Kev Walker serve up here with his origin… you may want to get a nightlight.”

Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral Body Count #1 hits shelves on May 13.
