Marvel’s ‘80s Transformers Comics Collection Announced

Skybound, Image Comics and Hasbro have announced a brand new collection bringing together the original ‘80s Marvel Transformers comics. The Transformers Compendium Vol. 1 is set to hit shelves in spring 2025. It will collect every issue of the original Marvel Comics series in a new reader-friendly compendium format for the very first time. The companies will follow that up later in 2025 with a second volume completing the entire Marvel run.

Marvel first began publishing the Transformers comics in 1984. That same year, the original animated series was surging in popularity. More recently, Skybound took over the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, launching the Energon Universe. The collection includes stories from writers Bob Budiansky (Sleepwalker), Bill Mantlo (The Incredible Hulk), Jim Salicrup (Spider-Man), and art from Frank Springer (Nick Furry, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Don Perlin (Ghost Rider) and Jose Delbo (Wonder Woman).

The compendium collects issues #1-44 of the original The Transformers comics and Headmasters #1-4. It retails for $64.99. You can check out the cover art for the collection below. The stories even included a special appearance from Spider-Man. Sean Mackiewicz, Senior Vice President and Publisher at Skybound, had this to say about it.

“Together, Skybound and Hasbro have brought the Transformers back to the top of the sales charts with the best-selling Energon Universe shared universe, and now it’s time to shine a light on the 40 years of comics and creators that paved the way. Starting with The Transformers and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero compendium series, we’re thrilled to give both new and original fans the chance to read the comics that started it all, as we build out the most comprehensive Hasbro backlist publishing program possible.”

Skybound and Hasbro have been making the most out of G.I. Joe and Transformers as of late. Beyond that, a lot has been happening with the franchises outside the comics. Paramount Pictures recently announced a Transformers and G.I. Joe live-action crossover movie. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is set to star in the film. The studio also has the animated Transformers One due to hit theaters later this year. Interestingly, Hemsworth is also voicing Optimus Prime in that movie.

The Transformers Compendium Vol. 1 hits bookstores and digital retailers on April 9, 2025, with the book arriving at comic book shops on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
