It’s the beginning of the end for the Immortal Thor. But in the Marvel universe, the end is often just paving the way for a new beginning. Such is the case for the God of Thunder, as he will be getting a reboot in the pages of Marvel Comics later this year. The publisher has announced that writer Al Ewing’s Immortal Thor will conclude with this summers issue #25. After that, Ewing will begin Thor’s next chapter.
“The omens can no longer be denied. The prophecy can no longer be delayed. The hour has come for the God of Thunder’s demise!” Marvel teased. “The story concludes in Immortal Thor #25, on sale in July, which features art by Justin Greenwood in his Marvel Comics debut. Stay tuned in the months ahead to learn about the next chapter of Ewing’s run, for as one legend ends, a new one begins!”
Characters die in the pages of Marvel Comics all of the time, only to be revived later. It’s just part of the deal. So no matter what fate awaits Thor at the end of this current series, something else will be waiting for him on the other side. Marvel has yet to release any details regarding the new series, only that it will launch later this year. Immortal Thor #23 arrives in May, with #24 due to arrive in June. It all wraps up in July when issue #25 hits stands.
Here is the synopsis for Immortal Thor #23
“Godwar! The All-Father had battled to the middle of the endless city – and now he faced the beast at the center of the maze. Kemur, who was bull and hawk and serpent, who was fire and the sword, now faced Thor Odinson…and perhaps neither would survive. This is the story of the Immortal Thor…and the God of Violence.”
And Here is the synopsis for Immortal Thor #25.
“The story ends…
At the end of his tale, Thor strode into Vidblainn, third land of the dead, whence nothing could return. And there, beyond all battles, beyond all cares, he stood and fought for justice one last time – against the great Serpent who wore his own face and held his own hammer. This was the story of the Immortal Thor…and the deciding of his fate.”
Marvel has made a habit of ending runs only to start something new in recent years. Thor #1 launched in 2019 under writer Donny Cates, only to be rebooted several times since then. It’s likely easier to get new readers on board with #1 issues. It’s just how things go these days, for better or worse.
On the movie side of things, Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) are directing the movie. The duo will also return for Avengers: Secret Wars, which is due to arrive in 2027. That movie will bring the Multiverse Saga to a close. Whether or not that’s the end of Hemsworth’s run as the character remains to be seen. Though it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that the God of Thunder will be due for a big screen reboot in the coming years as well.
Immortal Thor #25 hits shelves on July 2.
