After debuting on CBS, Supergirl found new life on The CW, among all the other solo DC superheroes series. And, like the other shows, Supergirl has also tackled with the subjects of inclusivity and representation.
And now Supergirl will feature TV's first transgender superhero! The first reports concerning this move appeared a couple of months ago. Back then, a casting call for the series was searching for someone to play Nia Nal, a transgender woman.
According to the casting call, Nia Nal is described as, "a confident, wunderkind of a fashionista. Once a political speechwriter, Nia is the newest addition to the CatCo investigative reporting team. With her she brings sparlking wit and biting humor but under that banter-y, chic facade, lays a soulful young woman who has much to offer the world." (via Comic Book)
Nia Nal becomes in the series the transgender superhero Dreamer.
This year's San Diego Comic Con didn't just confirm those reports. In this way, now we know who will play this new character!
In this way, it was just announced that Nicole Maines will portray Nia Nal/ Dreamer! And Maines explained what she wants to achieve by taking this role:
“We can be whoever we want, we can do whatever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are. We've had trans representation in television for a while but it hasn't been the right representation.” (Screen Rant)
It is very clear that Nicole Maines praises The CW for actually casting a transgender in the role of a transgender superhero. And that particularly after Scarlett Johansson was cast to play a transgender man in Rub & Tug (following the backlash, Scarlett Johansson withdrew from the role).
