Uncanny X-Men Trailer Released by Marvel

Marvel has released a brand new trailer for Uncanny X-Men #1. This is a big part of the plan to revamp the mutants in the pages of Marvel Comics. During SXSW in March, Marvel revealed the future of these characters, which kicks off next week with the release of X-Men #1. But that’s just part of the equation. A new beginning full of core X books and spin-offs is on the way. This is one of the big ones, and it looks pretty wild. Check it out.

The trailer is full of wild imagery, from giant serpent creatures to Gambit doing magic. There’s a lot to process. The hook here is that without Professor X, the X-Men are now under the leadership of Rogue. They also decide to relocate to Lousianna, which is pretty interesting. Marvel isn’t just falling back on the familiar with these new books, that much is clear. This series is written by Gail Simone (Domino, Batgirl), with artwork by David Marquez (Civil War II, Invincible Iron Man.

Here is the synopsis for Uncanny X-Men #1.

“Professor X…is gone! A core group of essential X-Men rise from the ashes to face a world without a home – and without Professor X! All bonds among the mutant community seem to be slipping away, and Rogue reluctantly finds herself as the hero designated to bring them back together…but a fearless, malignant power is out there hunting mutants, and it has a terrible secret that may destroy what remains of the X-Men!”

This all comes at a pivotal time for the franchise. X-Men ‘97 released on Disney+ earlier this year to great success. That has reignited interest in the characters in a very meaningful way. It’s been several years since we’ve had a movie in theaters. But the last couple flamed out, as Dark Phoenix was a critical and commercial disaster. The New Mutants also wasn’t done any favors by the pandemic and its many delays. But now, the future of the X-Men seems bright.

“The shadows of the giants who have worked on this book are all over the landscape, and it gets a little emotional to think about,” Simone said about the book. “Everyone has an X-Man they feel speaks to them directly. There’s no other franchise like it in comics. It’s an honor and a thrill and a panic, all at once. My first idea was, I want to lay out a welcome mat for all readers: new, returning and lifelong. They deserve the best mutant stories I can give them. I want to focus on the humanity, no pun intended. Big action, big personalities.”

Aside from the comics and animation, the mutants are getting ready to return to the big screen as well. Marvel Studios recently hired writer Michael Lesslie to write the X-Men reboot for the MCU. It’s still unclear when we’ll see the movie, but it’s probably still a few years away. In the meantime, we’ve these new books to look forward to.

Uncanny X-Men #1 hits shelves on August 7.
