Comic book crossovers are fairly commonplace. Examples include The Joker/The Mask, Spider-Man/Superman, Hulk/Pitt, Savage Dragon/Hellboy and Batman/Spawn.
The potential combinations, given the number of different comic book brands and the number of characters within them, are practically endless, but there are definitely some exciting possibilities.
Crossovers can either pit key characters against each other or see them teaming up and it is the latter that we’ll be discussing here.
Here are five Marvel/DC team-ups that would make awesome crossovers.
Quasar / Green Lantern
Quasar AKA Wendell Vaughn (first appearance 1978) has a lot in common with any given Green Lantern (let’s say Hal Jordan – first appearance 1959) in terms of them being predominantly space-based superheroes and in terms of their powersets.
Both characters require an item of power to be the heroes they are – in Vaughn’s case it’s the Quantum Bands and in any Green Lantern’s case it’s a Power Ring – and they can both fly at great speeds, fire energy blasts, project forcefields, work as sophisticated computers and create solid constructs of pure energy.
The main reason it would be cool to see them team-up is that it would be a visual feast! Their constructs working in tandem would be awesome and you can certainly imagine the duo trying to outdo each other with regards to the complexity and power of what they create – and that would be a lot of fun to see.
Doctor Strange / Doctor Fate
Doctor Strange AKA Stephen Strange (first appearance 1963) and Doctor Fate AKA Kent Nelson (first appearance 1940) are the two flagship magic-based characters in Marvel and DC respectively.
The topic of “who would win” in a battle between the two sorcerers is an often-discussed one between fans – and it’s generally felt that it would a well-fought tie – but wouldn’t it be even more cool to see them teaming-up to defeat a multiversal supernatural threat?
Seeing the pair standing together in their respective majestic outfits – complete with flowing capes – combining their spells to defeat an opponent would be a colourful treat. Their combined forcefields would be near impenetrable and the beings and spells they could invoke would make for a combination capable of posing a threat to even the most powerful of evil threats.
Captain Marvel / Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel AKA Carol Danvers (first appearance 1968) and Captain Marvel AKA Billy Batson (also known as Shazam – first appearance 1940) are two very different characters – not least because they are different genders – but it would be really fun to see them teaming-up with each other.
The fact that they share a name would be a humorous focal point and their reactions to the fact they have the same name as a hero of the opposite sex would be fun to see (as would Danvers’ reaction to the fact that Batson is actually a child when he’s not in his superhero form).
They also share similar powersets – flight, super-strength, speed, stamina and durability, as well as energy-based powers (lightning blasts the case of Batson and energy projection and absorption in the case of Danvers) – so they could surely work well in unison.
Silver Surfer / Takion
The Silver Surfer AKA Norin Radd (first appearance 1966) and Takion AKA Joshua Saunders (first appearance 1996) are two cosmic heroes in Marvel and DC respectively. The space-based characters have a lot in common and would be extremely formidable together.
It would be cool to see the pair encounter each other in space, perhaps initially attacking each other thinking they are threats to each other, stalemate each other in battle (as their power levels and powersets are relatively similar), before calling a ceasefire, realising they’re on the same side and teaming-up for a common cause.
They both fly at amazing speeds, they’re both incredibly strong and durable and they both have incredible energy-based powers and, together with their similar shiny and almost god-like appearances, they’d make a really spectacular team.
Thanos / Darkseid
It isn’t just heroic duos who make potentially awesome teams. Putting two of the greatest villains together as a duo would be pretty damn awesome – especially if that duo happened to be the Mad Titan Thanos (first appearance 1973) and the Lord of Apokolips Darkseid (first appearance 1970).
Granted, the pair have very different goals in their comics, but they look remarkably similar, are both equally as powerful (with very similar versatile powersets ranging from super-strength and durability to molecular manipulation and telepathy) and they would make one hell of a formidable combination.
With their awesome baseline power, their thirst for items of power and their exceptional planning skills, they would be a threat to the entire multiverse – assuming they could work together, that is (although, even if they did, they’d probably just turn on each other eventually).
