James Wan is set to helm the Aquaman movie. He recently made it clear that his movie's tone won't be at all similar to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The director spoke further about the DC Extended Universe during his panel at WonderCon.
First of all, Wan admits that he was "never so in depth" with the King of the Seven Seas, as he was more inclined toward X-Men, Spider-Man, and Batman. But Wan finds the notion that the superhero's huge world is actually on our planet "kind of cool". He elucidates (via Slash Film):
…The thing about Aquaman that's cool is he's not an alien, right? He's from our planet and he's from a society that we're not privy to in the context of the story. Isn't it crazy to think that we've explored space more than we have explored the depths of our ocean? That just fires up my imagination about potential sea monsters and cool creatures, that kind of stuff.
Does that mean he’s considering The Trench for the movie? Don't forget that Geoff Johns created the villainous race of carnivorous sea creatures, and this man is actively involved in the movie franchise.
Wan explains how much influence Zack Snyder will have on the Aquaman movie!
James Wan might be directing the standalone Aquaman movie but he will be using the character only after Zack Snyder has used him twice, in Batman v Superman and the Justice League. And it's no secret that Snyder is the spearhead of the DC Extended Universe, so it's pretty reasonable to consider that he would have some influence on every movie in the franchise. But exactly how much of an influence would he have on an Aquaman movie? According to Wan (via Cinema Blend):
Well, I think the story that I would like to tell is still, at the end of the day, my story. And that's what's cool with Zack; he's actually very respectful of that. He's actually helping me out in some ways with certain things that he's doing with his [films], so that I can have better groundwork with the standalone Aquaman story.
The director thinks that the key for making DC, Marvel, or any big franchise movie requiring that the director has to play within the sandbox, is “"to create your own castle" in the sandbox. Well, the Aquaman movie won't be the first big franchise project for James Wan. He directed last year's colossal blockbuster, Furious 7. So he's had plenty of experience in creating his own castle when he’s in the sandbox!
Patrick Wilson might reprise his Batman v Superman role in the Aquaman movie!
Watchmen star Patrick Wilson has a small role in Batman v Superman, that of the US President. The actor has worked with James Wan a number of times, in The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2, and the upcoming The Conjuring 2. So, will we get to see Patrick Wilson in the Aquaman movie, as well? When asked, James Wan responded, (via Coming Soon), “You just might!”
