Ant-Man Suit Explained

Ant-Man suit explained

Ant-Man hits theaters in less than two months (July 17th, just to jog your memory), and it will be the first live-action movie for the big screen we get to see Marvel's shrinking superhero in.

Of course, the Ant-Man suit is la pièce de résistance: this is the one artifact that grants Scott Lang his superhero persona, as it did before with Hank Pym himself, the first Ant-Man in the Marvel Universe.

We had the opportunity to see how the suit looks like. Now Marvel has released some extra pics of the costume accompanied by explanations.

If you've ever wondered how the suit works, what its underlying technology is, what makes its wearer shrink and communicate with ants, hit the jump to get the details!

Overall view of the Ant-Man suit

Scott Lang won't just become an ant-whisperer and shrink: the costume also turns him into a bullet.

As Marvel's official description puts it, it's like this:

"Built by Hank Pym, the Ant-Man suit is designed to give its wearer extraordinary powers: to shrinks in size, grow in strength and communicate with ants".

Well, nothing new here, but the best is yet to come. So scroll down to see how it works.

The Pym Particles

Effect of the Pym Particles

Effect of the Pym Particles

No mystery here any longer. Marvel's description goes in depth: "The suit is powered by the legendary Pym Particles, which shrink the distance between atoms".

Which, in fact, means the following: "The Pym Particle shrinks the distance between atoms, or as we say decreases or increases atomic relative distance. The Pym Particle is a formula discovered by Dr. Hanry Pym that is capable of shrinking atomic distance. Meaning it can shrink the distance between atoms while increasing their mass and strength".

More exactly"¦

"¦ yes, more exactly, "Dr. Henry Pym originally discovered and isolated a rare group of subatomic particles, which have become known as the Pym Particles, which could increase or decrease the size and mass of objects or living beings. The Pym Particles work by stunting matter into the Kosmos Dimension when shrinking a subject or accruing extra matter from that dimension when enlarging".

But what about the ability to communicate with ants once Scott Lang puts on his Ant-Man suit? How does that work? "˜Cause obviously the underlying Pym Particle technology doesn't explain that.

The specialized helmet

It seems it is the helmet who grants Scott Lang the power to manipulate ants. Marvel's presentation is short and goes like this: "Telepathic communication and mind control with ants".

So, OK, I'm not particularly versed in such matters, but if you are at least vaguely a physics-savvy, what say you? Could this explanation be, even remotely, sustained? Could the Ant-Man suit be as "sci" as it is "fi"?
