His character may not have been an exact match for the comics’ Wolverine, but Hugh Jackman won over audiences with his portrayal. During his 17 years as the Weapon X, he had plenty of time to show even the most hardcore fans that it was necessary to adapt the character to fit into the cinematic X-Men shared universe.
This year, Jackman and his fellow X-Men veteran, Patrick Stewart, made their respective final appearances in the critically acclaimed Logan. Some fans are still hoping that Jackman will return, but Simon Kinberg has already discussed the possibility of recasting the character.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jackman addressed this issue, and had the following to say about the issue:
I hope it will be recast.
So, if or when that happens, we’ll know that Jackman gave his blessing.
The actor then reminisced about how he got the role in the first place. Dougray Scott was originally cast as Wolverine, but he had to back out at the last minute due to his previous commitment to Mission Impossible 2. Bryan Singer contacted Jackman:
I met him early on and I said to him, “Man, I am sorry.” And he said, “It's just business, but you’ve just gotten one of the greatest roles out there, so go crush it.” I just remember being so impressed by that and his class that hopefully I am a big enough guy that when someone else takes over, I will do exactly what was done to me"¦And I feel glad to just be a part of the legacy of that character. I feel great parts – great characters – outlive the actors that play them. Bond, Superman, Batman"¦So there you go.
He’s certainly right about the character's legacy, but who could replace him? What do you think?
