With Spider-Man: Homecoming, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has added another successful film to its already impressive gallery. The studio also managed to blend genres yet again by making Homecoming the first high school-themed superhero flick. The movie was our first opportunity to meet Peter Parker, the boy behind Captain America: Civil War’s Spider-Man.
Homecoming is certainly a hit, but it may have have messed up the MCU timeline a little bit. Want to know more? Well, if you haven't seen the movie yet, you might want to skip this spoiler!
It’s been said that the amount of time that passes between films is mirrored in the movies themselves, and we’ve learned that Spider-Man: Homecoming takes place in 2020, or as mentioned in the film, eight years after the Battle of New York.
However, according to other clues from the movie – including the Stark Expo posters – the action takes place in 2017. We also know that the events of the film take place right after the events of Captain America: Civil War, which is still a far cry from being eight years after the BoNY.
Aside from The studio made a mistake, there are explanations for this timeline retcon. Marvel could have adjusted the timeline to make room for a high school-aged Peter Parker, just as they could have adjusted it to actually have a young Parker in Iron Man 2.
But there could be another explanation, one that would connect to the events of Doctor Strange. What if the Sorcerer Supreme was never supposed to use the Eye of Agamotto? What if he changed things when he used the Time Stone?
This is plausible, especially since Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 also seemed to mess with the timeline a bit. The flowers Ego planted haven't been mentioned in the MCU, and Stan Lee couldn't remember when he met Stark, since those events hadn't taken place at that time.
We believe that this wasn't a mistake on Marvel’s part, and the reasons for this change will be explained.
