Last Friday, Daniel Brühl was officially announced by Marvel in an undisclosed role for Captain America: Civil War. Best known for his roles in Inglorious Basterds and Rush, Daniel Brühl was also nominated at a Golden Globe for the best actor in a supporting role in the 2013 movie.
About the actor, Kevin Feige said, "with Daniel's ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes."
Potential role in Captain America: Civil War
While nobody said what character will be portrayed by Daniel Brühl, Variety quickly came with a scoop, saying that the actor will actually be Baron Mordo.
Baron Mordo is one of the best known enemies of Doctor Strange and he is a Transylvanian nobleman who was the student of the Ancient One (the mentor of Doctor Strange). He is an expert in black magic and other mystical arts, and he also has some martial arts skills.
Other potential roles are M.O.D.O.K., Baron Blood, Doctor Faustus and Baron Zemo - while Daniel Brühl might play any of these characters, one thing is certain: he will be a villain.
Why Baron Mordo?
While magic seems a bit of a stretch for the Russo Brothers' realistic style, Civil War is meant to push the MCU further - and why wouldn’t it be the movie that finally brings magic into the shared universe? (we're not mentioning the Mandarin since, well, he really didn't appear in Iron Man 3).
Of course, we are not expecting to see the Baron fighting against Cap, since Baron Mordo and his magical abilities might be just too much for Steve Rogers to handle. However, this is the perfect choice for this actor, since he has proved before that he can tackle with any kind of roles.
Furthermore, Captain America has always expanded the MCU. By including Mordo, Captain America: Civil War will continue on this line.
If this happens, we can expect to see Daniel Brühl and his Baron Mordo as the main villain in 2016's Doctor Strange.
