Justice League: 10 Stories for the DCEU

Justice by Alex Ross (Source Joker's Lair)

At this moment, we know that the Wonder Woman solo flick will lead directly into the first Justice League movie. But, before her, it will be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the movie to present us with the majority of the superheroes: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and Flash. So could there be a connection between these two movies, something which could give away who the main villain of the DCEU will be?

For the time being, we suspect that this big baddie is none other than Darkseid, the ruthless dictator of Apokolips and one of the biggest threats the Justice League has faced in the comics. But those dream sequences to be featured in Batman v Superman can simply be that, nightmares with no connection to what will later on happen in the DCEU.

So what villains and storylines could make it onto the big screen? Here are out top 10 choices!

Justice League: Origin

This one is a no-brainer, if we take into account the fact that the DCEU will be built mainly upon the New 52 comics. Justice League: Origin, as the name suggests, shows the events which lead to the forming of the Justice League. If this story will be adapted, it will certainly skip the moments when the superheroes meet - we say that because this will happen during Batman v Superman.

However, all the other events could be adapted. Thus, the newly formed team will have no trouble with the scores of parademons sent to take over the world. However, they will find themselves at odds when the hidden mastermind appears: Darkseid himself, who cannot be hurt by any of the attacks of the separated superheroes.

Superman is abducted, Green Lantern is almost killed when trying to solo Darkseid, Flash can't do a thing, and so on. The only one who finds some sort of answer is Cyborg - so, after Batman saves the Man of Steel, Darkseid is sent back to Apokolips, not before swearing to return.

If the DCEU will adapt this storyline (and we don't see why it wouldn't), then this will be an action-fest like never before. And the best thing is that the heroes won't fight between them until the major threat is revealed - Batman and Superman will already be pals after the events of Dawn of Justice.

Legends

Another storyline which could be tied with both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman and which could act as a prequel to Justice League Part Two is Legends. The storyline also features Darkseid, although he will remain hidden throughout the movie, to be revealed in Part Two.

Legends will thus see the introduction of Glorious Godfrey, who will infiltrate the highest circles of power on Earth and persuade everybody that the newly formed Justice League has the most malevolent intentions for humanity. Given the destruction presented in Man of Steel (as well as in the trailers for Batman v Superman), the people of Earth will be persuaded that Superman and co. are of no good.

So the better half of the movie should be all about the rhetoric of this new character - obviously, some heroic actions will be depicted. By Glorious Godfrey will use the power of persuasion to present them in the most negative way.

The third act, as always, should be all about the reveal of the villain - who will have to appeal to his own private army, The Justifiers. Who knows - maybe he'll also appeal to some of Darkseid's Furies in order to fend of the attacks of the Justice League.

As far as we are concerned, this is a better choice for a first Justice League flick.

Justice

Here is an interesting concept for the first Justice League flick, one which perfectly falls on the personality of Lex Luthor. Of course, this storyline cannot be adapted without some major deviations, simply because there are so many characters which need to be introduced. But it can work perfectly otherwise, simply because it won't be just another action flick, with huge battle set pieces.

Thus, the first movie should be all about the villains (namely Lex Luthor), who schemes against all the Justice League members. But he does that in order to prevent the destruction of the world, destruction which cannot be stopped by the League itself. He doesn't try to change the public's opinion about the League. Instead, he simply removes them out-of-the-way, in order to focus on saving the world by any means necessary.

As it will be revealed, Lex Luthor is right to believe that the world will be destroyed. But, while in the comic version Brainiac is the big baddie, the movie might as well switch to having Darkseid working in the shadows. Just have the uber-powerful villain control Lex Luthor, without the latter even suspecting that his fears are actually induced.

Of course, Brainiac could work as well, but we don't see that happening, simply because the villain will have to appear out of nowhere.

Justice League: Tower of Babel

If in Justice Lex Luthor is the one that incapacitates the Justice League, in Tower of Babel the Batman is responsible for the defeat of the League. As we see from the trailers of Batman v Superman, this new version of the character is a completely paranoid one (even if for good reason). Simply put it, even if he is a part of the team, he also prepares contingency plans just in case the League members become evil or are being controlled by some evil entity.

The comic book version had Ra's al Ghul being the mastermind who steals Batman's contingency plans. But we already had him in Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, with the League of Shadows front and center in the first and third flick. So maybe another villain should be responsible for this.

And this is the best way to introduce some other big baddies, which can be revealed in Justice League Part Two. Obviously, we are once again considering Darkseid for this hidden role - but it might as well be someone else. Maybe even Brainiac, who was long rumored to be the main antagonist of the DCEU. He could control some Lex Luthor type of villain and make him steal the contingency plans.

Then, when the Justice League will be out-of-the-way, he will simply come and lay waste to the world.

One of the earliest rumors about the first Justice League films saw Brainiac coming to Earth, following the same beacon which brought Zod. We guess this could work out"¦

The Death of Superman

Batman v Superman will bring Doomsday, the one guy who killed (temporarily, of course) Superman. Most obviously, this won't be the outcome of this year's movie - Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman will defeat the Zod corpse and form the Justice League.

But, even if Doomsday's origins won't be respected in the DCEU, this doesn't mean that he cannot come back to life. After all, the villain is known for being able to do that and for becoming immune to whatever killed him. So yeah - have the Trinity kill Doomsday, only to have him come back in Justice League Part One.

And then show the world how powerful he really is, able to defeat the entire League single-handedly.

Obviously, Part Two will deal with the return of Superman, who will find the means (with the help of Batman, of course) to neutralize the villain, without actually killing him.

Identity Crisis

Here is a Justice League story which doesn't need the presence of a superpowered villain. As a matter of fact, it doesn't need an actual villain at all - for that matter, even the most uninteresting or minor character could play that part.

And that is because Identity Crisis doesn't have to be a punch-fest, like Man of Steel was. It can be called, instead, a classic mystery story, in which anybody (from minor characters to the most well-known superheroes) could be the villain.

What is interesting is that such a movie is all about the interaction between the characters and their attempts to find out the truth. Obviously, some proper villains will need to be present (as the usual suspects), but they needn't be major ones.

A twist can be provided if there is an actual baddie in the shadows, who can push someone to commit murder. But this is too big of a stretch, which will eventually lead into a full blown-out brawl. Identity Crisis shouldn't be about that.

Forever Evil

Forever Evil could be the storyline which pits for the first time a group of supervillains against a group of superheroes. This is a storyline so ample that it needs to be split in two Justice League movies, with the first one focusing on the defeat of the League, while the second one seeing traditional villains coming to their rescue.

Does that sound too weird? Well, it isn't weirder than the Suicide Squad premise. Only this time it will be Lex Luthor who comes to aid the defeated League. Who will be the main antagonist? Well, take your pick - the comics saw the Crime Syndicate taking over the world. But it could be just a single villain, instead of so many, a villain who could possess, mind-control, or physically defeat the superheroes.

And this two-parter could lead to other Justice League movies, which will show that Lex Luthor still holds a grudge on Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

Flashpoint

Flashpoint (source My Latest Distraction)

This is basically the beginning of the New 52 - Flash goes back in time to save his mother and, unwillingly, changes the entire history. Aquaman and Wonder Woman are at war, Superman doesn't exist (well, he does, but he was captured by the military since he crashed on Earth), there is no Green Lantern (literally), and so on.

And even if there will be some twitches here and there (namely with the Batman), this storyline could be adapted further down the line. Basically, everything that we took for granted in the DC universe has changes and is unrecognizable (the Batman runs casinos and isn't too shy when it comes to killing his enemies).

We say that this could happen further down the line simply because this is one of the best ways to reboot the DCEU and bring in new heroes and new villains (though we cannot imagine it without the Trinity).

You certainly thought about this too, given the way the new Aquaman looks. And you certainly thought about Flashpoint being the perfect means of rebooting the universe (we saw this happening with Days of Future Past, for example). In any way, DC and Warner Bros need to consider this possibility.

Darkseid War

This is a story in the making - but an interesting one nonetheless. Darkseid becomes more and more interested in the superheroes of Earth and sees them as the means to conquer the Universe. His eyes are especially set on Wonder Woman and the Amazonians, especially because of their ancient heritage (Wonder Woman is also connected in some way to Darkseid).

He intends to bio-format the entire planet in order to fulfil his dreams. But he encounters the Justice League, who prove to be too powerful for him.

In the meantime, it is revealed that Darkseid waged war on Earth in order to combat another threat, one which is even more deadly than he is. Is that the Anti-Monitor? Apparently so - what will the superheroes do? As said, this is a work in progress. However, it can be adapted starting with the first Justice League film.

Blackest Night

Ever since it was announced that the Green Lantern movie will actually be a Green Lantern Corps one, we wanted this story to be adapted. Even if it will be now, even if it will be later on, Blackest Night needs to happen. This storyline could be connected with everything that has happened thus far in the DCEU, as well as with any number of storylines on this list.

It is so impressive in its scope and features so many events and characters, that it needs to span over several solo and ensemble movies. Furthermore, it can show why the Green Lanterns are actually the protectors of the Universe, being able to handle threats far beyond the powers of Superman and all the others.
