Spider-Man: Brand New Day is literally one of the most successful movies of all time at this point. It stole the opening weekend record at the box office from Avengers: Endgame, with critics and audiences alike rallying around Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Naturally, a sequel has become a top priority for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. They’ve already lined up a director and it’s not a surprising one.
According to Deadline, Destin Daniel Cretton is expected to return for the unnamed, eventual Spider-Man sequel. He’s also developing a Hawaii 5-O movie so how long it will be before he circles back to Spidey remains to be seen. But given how well Cretton has worked within the MCU, particularly on this movie, it’s logical that they would want him back.
Cretton previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It remains one of the most acclaimed movies of the Multiverse Saga. Cretton was also behind Wonder Man, which was met with a warm response on Disney+. The previously announced second season was canceled, but that is neither here nor there.
To date, Brand New Day has made more than $2.4 billion at the global box office. It’s the third-highest grossing movie of all time. It trails only Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) and Avatar ($2.9 billion). The MCU had a down year in 2025, with Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World majorly underperforming. This was a much-needed bounce back.

“It’s a brand new day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.”
The cast also includes Jon Bernthal (Punisher), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Zendaya (MJ), Michael Mando (Scorpion), Marvin Jones III (Tombstone), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds) and Tramell Tillman (Bill Metzger). Sadie Sink also stars, with her role being the movie’s biggest secret.
With Cretton returning for Spider-Man 5, we are left with one big question. Shang-Chi 2 is still in development at Marvel Studios. It was expected that Cretton would return to helm the sequel. However, his dance care is filling up rather quickly. Will Marvel be forced to find someone else to take the reins? That’s seeming increasingly likely. Time will tell.
