At least one of Gotham City’s many villains won’t be appearing in The Batman Part II. The villain in question is Sofia Falcone, who made her on-screen debut in HBO’s The Penguin. Played by Cristin Milioti, the sequel’s director Matt Reeves has confirmed that she won’t be on the call sheet. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see her elsewhere in the Bat-verse at some point down the line.
“Cristin’s not in this one,” Reeves said when asked about the possibility of seeing Sofia in The Batman sequel while speaking with MTV “That’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, so. But we’ll see. I mean, I think she’s incredible. What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did in creating that character – I mean, creating this version of the character – is so special.”
Reeves has been working on the script for a long, long time. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has called the script for The Batman Part II great, which is good news for fans. But since The Penguin didn’t even air until the script was well underway, it didn’t make sense to try to fit Sofia into the proceedings. Reeves continued…
“It’d be really exciting to do something with her. But, she’s not in this one, in full disclosure, just because we were so far along in the story that it was like, ‘Oh gee, we could,’ it might upset the applecart, let’s say, given where the story goes, and what we were exploring. There are some things where it’s like, ‘Oh, we’d love to do this,’ but actually, that doesn’t fit within where the story goes.”
Milioti was the breakout star of The Penguin, which won a total of 9 Emmys. Milioti walked away with an Emmy for her work as Sofia Falcone. Even though it was originally billed as a limited series, HBO has teased that The Penguin season 2 could be in the cards. Who knows? Maybe we could get a season focused more heavily on Falcone.
As for The Batman sequel, Robert Pattinson is due to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne. The sequel has been delayed multiple times but is finally set to begin filming early next year. Plot details remain firmly under wraps for the time being. It also hasn’t been confirmed who the main villain will be, though speculation runs rampant. Colin Farrell’s Penguin isn’t expected to have a big role this time around.
“I don’t have many scenes, I don’t believe, but I’ll be there for whatever,” Farrell previously said about Penguin’s role in the sequel. “Matt Reeves is so brilliant. I don’t know what the story is yet. I just know that obviously Matt has slaved for a few years now to really make something special. And he holds a very high bar for himself. He’s so meticulous; he cares so deeply about what he does.”
The Batman Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
