Would Andrew Garfield Return As Spider-Man? 100 Percent

Spider-Man: No Way Home - Sony Pictures

It’s been nearly three years since Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters. The future of the franchise is a little up in the air. Sony and Marvel Studios are actively working on a fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. But what about Andrew Garfield? Does his version of the character have a future on screen? At the very least, the actor is very open to returning.

Garfield was recently the subject of an Esquire profile. The actor is currently promoting his new movie We Live in Time. During the conversation, The Amazing Spider-Man star was asked if he would come back to the franchise. Garfield made his surprise return in No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire, who was the star of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and
odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

This is two-fold. For one, Garfield wants to come back for another good story. No Way Home literally became one of the biggest movies of all time, taking in more than $1.9 billion at the global box office. It was a massive crowd-pleaser. Coming back for something lesser would be understandably disappointing for him. Beyond that, it depends on how Sony wants to proceed with the franchise. Do they want to do a more street-level story with Holland? Or do they want another multiverse adventure?

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is set to direct Spider-Man 4. No plot details have been confirmed at this time. Jon Watts directed all three of Holland’s previous films. The expectation is for filming to begin early next year, with the film likely due to arrive sometime in 2026. Garfield could, in theory, have a part to play. There’s an outside possibility that Sony could give Garfield another solo film as well. Similarly, fan demand for Maguire and Raimi to reunite for a version of Spider-Man 4 has been palpable

Sony still controls the rights to Spider-Man and all of the characters in that universe. A deal with Disney allows Peter Parker to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the same time, Sony continues to make spin-offs, such as the Venom trilogy. The future of that universe is uncertain as well. Madame Web and Morbius both disappointed. Tom Hardy is leaving the franchise after Venom: The Last Dance. This to say, anything could happen at this point because Sony hasn’t announced much by way of further live-action Spider-Man films.

Spider-Man 4 does not currently have a release date.
