Hellboy: The Crooked Man Is Going Straight To Streaming

Hellboy: The Crooked Man Is Going Straight To Streaming

Hellboy: The Crooked Man - Millennium Media

Some good news and bad news today. The good news is that the new Hellboy movie is coming very soon. The bad news is that it’s skipping theaters altogether, it appears. Indeed, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set to arrive on VOD and Digital platforms beginning Tuesday, October 8. With that release only two weeks away (as of this writing), there is no time to plot a theatrical release. This one is getting dumped straight to streaming.

According to Comicbook.com, Hellboy: The Crooked Man will arrive on VOD on October 8. It will be available via retailers such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play and others. It appears as though the film will be available at a premium VOD price of $19.99 out of the gate. That could change between now and the release date. It’s also important to note that it looks like the film will grace theaters in the U.K. and other countries around the world. Just how robust the big screen release will be remains to be seen.

Millennium Media produced The Crooked Man, which serves as an R-rated reboot of the franchise. Ketchup Entertainment is on board to distribute the film. It seems all parties decided it was best to skip an expensive marketing campaign for this one and just go direct-to-consumers at home. That probably has to do with the low-budget nature of the film. This is far less expensive than the Guillermo del Toro movies, or even Lionsgate’s 2019 reboot.

Here is the synopsis for Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

“The new film will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.”

The trailers for The Crooked Man have demonstrated a horror-first tone. At the same time, it does look like a much smaller-scale adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comics. It looks closer to a made-for-TV movie from the early 2000s, as opposed to a big studio movie, for better or worse. Given that the 2019 movie was a major critical and commercial flop, the new direction does make some sense.

The cast for the film is led by Jack Kesy as Hellboy. It also includes Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, Hannah Margetson and Martin Bassindale. Mike Richardson, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Rob Van Norden and Yariv Lerner are producing the film. Mike Mignola, Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, Tanner Mobley, Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell are on board as executive producers.
