After years (and years) of being stuck in development hell, The Crow remake finally has a release date. Not only that, but the movie has already been filmed and is in the can, so it’s really happening this time. Lionsgate has officially set the new adaptation of the cult favorite comic to hit theaters on June 7, 2024. Mark your calendars, everyone.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate is delaying the John Wick spin-off Ballerina to next year. As a result, The Crow is taking over that movie’s old release date. The new film was directed by Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell). The James O’Barr comic was first adapted in 1994. Directed by Alex Proyas, it starred Brandon Lee as the lead character Eric Draven. Lee tragically died on set while filming, with the movie release after his passing.
This new interpretation stars Bill Skarsgard (It) in the lead role. Other actors suck as Luke Evans and Jason Momoa were attached at various points. The cast also includes FKA twigs, Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila and Jordan Bolger. Zach Baylin and Will Schneider penned the screenplay.
Here is the synopsis for The Crow.
“Soulmates Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgard) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right. ”
Corin Hardy (The Hallow) was long set to helm the remake but dropped out in 2018. That was just one speed bump on this movie’s messy road to completion. Luckily, Sanders and Skarsgard finally got it over the finish line. Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, Samuel Hadida and Edward R. Pressman serve as producers on the new film. Lionsgate’s EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions Charlotte Koh had this to say about the film when the studio acquired it last year.
“We appreciate what the Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology. To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”
“The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on,” the producers added at the time. “We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy. Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can’t wait to share this vision with film audiences.”
The Crow is set to hit theaters on June 7.
