The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in a big way. Even though the first movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet, a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is already officially in development, as reported by Variety. What’s more, Paramount has confirmed that a new TV show connected to the films is on the way as well. The series will span two seasons and bridge the gap between the movies. Neither project has locked down a release date just yet.
The Mutant Mayhem sequel will bring back much of the original team. This includes Point Grey Pictures and director Jeff Rowe. As for the series, it is set to air on Paramount. Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) and Alan Wan (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) are set to serve as executive producers and showrunners. Paramount and Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins had this to say in a statement:
“In the nearly 40 years since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles launched into the zeitgeist, it has entertained generations of fans and only continues to grow. We are excited to grow TMNT’s legacy in partnership with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg at Point Grey, and Jeff Rowe, who are innovating the franchise with their singular brand of humor and elevated storytelling for audiences everywhere, across virtually every platform.”
Here is the synopsis for Teenage Mutant Ninka Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
“In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”
Plot details for the movie sequel are currently being kept under wraps. As for the show, the synopsis reads, “The Turtles will be challenged like never before as Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey each go it alone for the first time. Faced with new threats and teaming up with old allies, the Turtles will discover who they really are when they don’t have their brothers at their sides.” Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon will also be reprising their roles as the Turtles.
Mutant Mayhem is hitting theaters next week, hoping to capture some of that same magic that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse captured for Marvel’s webslinger. The animated film is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It is the first Ninja Turtles movie to hit theaters since the live-action Out of the Shadows in 2016. Elsewhere, a video game based on TMNT: The Last Ronin is also in development.
