A lot of fans have had a hard time believing that Christian Bale is no longer the Caped Crusader, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn't belong to the same world as Dark Knight Trilogy. We’ve even seen a 15-chapter long thesis, with more than 50 images, just trying to prove that Christopher Nolan's Batman does exist in the newly formed DC Extended Universe.
Well, in a recent interview with Film Ink, Zack Snyder reveals that he actually wanted to cast Christian Bale in Batman v Superman, but not as Bruce Wayne! Claiming that the DC Extended Universe is "a total and opposite reality" in comparison with Nolan's trilogy, the director stated:
It's another universe, so we couldn't hire Christian Bale if we wanted to, because he doesn't exist in our world. Maybe we could hire him to play another part. We did talk about that briefly.
Snyder revealed that he wanted to hire Bale to play a role other than the Bat of Gotham, just to "make that obvious"! So, what role could he play in Batman v Superman? You won't like the first part of Zack Snyder's following statement:
Christian could play, like, Alfred with age makeup. No! Of course not. But you know what I mean.
And it wasn't only the fans who were uncomfortable with Bale’s not being recast as Batman - people at Warner Bros. also found it difficult to swallow. The director explained:
Even people at the studio would say, “Who are you getting from the other movies?” And I was like, “Hey, come on guys, let's all understand, it's a different world.”
Batman v Superman is not The Dark Knight Returns!
We have heard many times that his work in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is enormously influenced by Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Snyder wants to clarify that the March 25 release isn't an adaptation of the graphic novel. He said in the interview:
I'm a huge fan of The Dark Knight Returns, but this movie is not The Dark Knight Returns.
The director did admit that he shared "a lot of aesthetic interest" with Frank Miller, and that he was inspired by Miller’s version of "an old Batman", which "rings true" for him. He added:
That's how I approached it, through that prism of what meets my standard of cool superhero.
